Vernier Transit Theodolite

Vernier Transit Theodolite

A vernier transit theodolite, also known as a transit theodolite, is a surveying instrument that has a telescope that can rotate 180° around its horizontal axis. The telescope’s rotation is called transiting, reversing, or plunging.

Here are some things to know about Vernier Transit Theodolites:
  • Least Count: The least count of a vernier transit theodolite depends on the type of vernier used and can range from 10″ to 20″.
  • Uses: Theodolites are used for surveying, navigation, meteorology, and more. They can measure and lay out angles and straight lines, and can be used to lay out building lines and corners.
  • Parts: A theodolite has a telescope that’s mounted on a horizontal spindle called the horizontal axis or trunnion axis.
Read the Vernier scale, you can:
  • Read the main scale.
  • Read the secondary scale (Vernier) measurement.
  • Add the two measurements together.
