Global Positioning System (GPS)

A handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver can be used for surveying to create accurate maps, measure distances, and determine the location of specific features on a property.

  • How it works: A GPS receiver receives signals from satellites in the GPS network, which orbit the Earth. The receiver calculates its location based on the distance to each satellite, the satellite’s position, and the time the data was transmitted. The receiver displays the location in latitude and longitude coordinates. 
  • Accuracy: GPS receivers used for surveying are more complex and expensive than everyday GPS receivers. They use sophisticated calculation methods and a high-quality antenna to improve accuracy. 
  • Speed: GPS surveying is faster than conventional surveying techniques. 
  • Methods: There are several methods of GPS surveying, including static, fast-static, kinematic, and OPUS. 
  • Data collection: To survey a property, you can walk around with the GPS receiver, covering all areas you want to include. 
  • Data transfer: Once you’ve collected the data, you can transfer it to mapping software to create a map. 
  • Data analysis: You can use the map to analyze and interpret the data, such as measuring distances, calculating areas, or identifying problem areas.
